Though wildlife sightings are fewer due to steep terrain, you might glimpse peregrine falcons, swallows, or deer along the shore. Full-Day Trip:

The full-day Royal Gorge trip delivers an intense, immersive rafting experience designed for adventure enthusiasts and experienced paddlers. Challenge yourself with powerful class IV (V) rapids including Sunshine Falls, Sledgehammer, and Wall Slammer. Enjoy dramatic views of 1,000-foot granite cliffs, the famous Royal Gorge Bridge, and relax riverside with an included lunch, providing a perfect mid-day recharge.

Step-by-Step

Meet at River Runners Royal Gorge at 9:15 am for the 10:00 am departure.
Gear fitting and comprehensive safety briefing.
Take a 20 minute scenic drive up river. Paddle through Bighorn Sheep Canyon, navigating exciting class III (IV) rapids.

Trip Photos

Relive your thrilling river run with professional photos that capture 10-15 images through the most exciting rapid. Photos can be purchased à la carte or as one package. This is a third-party service provided by Arkansas Valley Digital Imaging (AVDI).

What to Wear & Bring

Essential Items:

Athletic moisture wicking clothing
Swimsuit
Secure footwear (water shoes with a back strap or old tennis shoes)

Valuables or electronics (secure in vehicle or with our check-in staff)
Flip-flops or sandals

Pro Tips

Skip sunscreen on your forehead—the helmet provides coverage, and sunscreen here can drip into your eyes. Apply sunscreen generously below the helmet line, and wear sunglasses for added protection.
Rapid weather and river conditions can change quickly; wear quick-drying layers to comfortably adapt throughout the day.
Bring a spare set of clothes and a towel to keep in your vehicle, ensuring you have dry clothes ready after your adventure.

Weather & Season

Rafting Season:

The best rafting on the Arkansas River occurs from mid-May through early September. Early season (mid-May to mid-June) delivers high-water thrills with intense rapids. Late June through July provides optimal flows for exciting adventures. In August and early September, expect slightly lower water levels, still offering excellent rafting with picturesque canyon views.

Trips Run Rain or Shine:
Rafting is naturally wet, so we embrace all weather! Trips proceed rain or shine, with rainy days often providing exciting river experiences. Prepare appropriately, and you’ll enjoy a thrilling adventure regardless of weather conditions.

Alternative Routes & Adjustments:
Your safety and enjoyment are always our top priority. River conditions occasionally require itinerary adjustments without prior notice. If changes occur, we ensure they enhance your safety while maintaining an exceptional rafting experience.

Safety & Waivers

Our Commitment to Safety:
Every Royal Gorge trip is led by highly trained, Swiftwater Rescue-certified guides with expertise in first aid and CPR. Comprehensive safety briefings, quality equipment, and Coast Guard-approved Type V personal flotation devices (PFDs) ensure your safety on this thrilling adventure.

Swimming Ability:
The Royal Gorge features advanced rapids, and strong swimming skills are required. Participants should feel confident in turbulent water conditions, physically active, and comfortable paddling vigorously through intense rapids.

Liability Waivers:
All participants age 18 and older must sign a liability waiver before departure. Participants under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. This ensures everyone is fully informed about the nature and inherent risks of rafting.

Cancellation Policy

Receive a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before your original reservation date. A rain check, minus $10 per person, will be issued for cancellations made with less than a 48-hour notice.

The River guide Shaun was excellent- he made the trip fun. He was a great coach in guiding us down River. Had a great experience with Courtney in making my trip reservation. Is the Royal Gorge rafting trip suitable for first-time rafters?

The Royal Gorge is an advanced whitewater experience with class IV (V) rapids, best suited for those comfortable with swimming, physically active, and seeking adventure. While prior rafting experience isn’t mandatory, participants must be confident swimmers and prepared for vigorous paddling. For families with younger or less experienced rafters, we recommend our beginner-friendly Bighorn Sheep Canyon trip.

How physically demanding is this trip?

This adventure involves several hours of active paddling through challenging rapids. Although our guides will ensure regular breaks, participants should be in good physical condition, comfortable in water, and ready for moderate to high physical exertion.

Are meals provided on the Royal Gorge rafting trip?

Half-day rafting adventures do not include meals. Our half-day trips are designed to maximize your excitement and time on the water—perfect if you’re looking to experience thrilling rapids and incredible scenery within just a few hours.

Full-day rafting adventures include a delicious riverside lunch. Our meals typically include a variety of sandwiches, fresh fruits, snacks, and beverages to keep you energized throughout the day. We can accommodate all dietary restrictions upon request.

Is rafting safe for children and teenagers?

The Royal Gorge trip is suitable for older teenagers (14+) who are strong swimmers and physically capable. Our minimum age recommendation may increase during high-water conditions to ensure participant safety.

If you have younger children, our Browns Canyon or Bighorn Sheep Canyon trips are perfect alternatives.

What wildlife or scenic highlights might we see during the trip?

The Royal Gorge offers dramatic scenery unlike anywhere else on the Arkansas River, featuring sheer granite canyon walls towering over 1,000 feet above the river. As you paddle beneath the iconic Royal Gorge Bridge and alongside the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, you’ll be immersed in a truly awe-inspiring setting. Due to the steep and rugged terrain, wildlife sightings are less common but still possible—look out for peregrine falcons soaring along cliff faces, swallows darting overhead, and the occasional deer along the banks.
