The calendars have turned to 2017, and those in the Colorado whitewater rafting world are looking at (and skiing) the snowpack. The Colorado high country has four months remaining of potential snow accumulation (about two-thirds of the snowpack season), but it’s hard not to speculate what the whitewater will be like when all of that snow melts into our beloved rivers. Right now the Arkansas River Basin is 111% of average with more snow in the forecast, so things are looking pretty good as we start the new year.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) measures the snow water equivalent throughout the state of Colorado. The snowpack in the Upper Arkansas River basin is 111% of normal as of January 4, 2017 – with more snow in the forecast.
According to meteorologist from Open Snow, the headwaters of the Arkansas River could receive up to two feet of snow in the next five days. Grab your skis or snowboard and head to the Arkansas River Valley for multiple powder days this week.

Multiple powder days are on tap for Monarch Mountain. Plan your visit and purchase lift tickets here.

At the upper end of the Aransas River Basin is Ski Cooper near Leadville, Colorado. The 5-day forecast calls for lots of snow, which will bode well for the whitewater rafting season in addition to multiple powder days this week.
