Cañon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge in 1929 and at 955 feet above the river it held the record as highest bridge in the world until 2001. The bridge is now the centerpiece of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park and is still owned by Cañon City. Other features of the park include gondolas and zip lines from rim to rim, the Royal Rush Sky Coaster, visitor center, children’s play land and much more.

The first excursion train traveled through the Royal Gorge on May 7, 1879. This was after years of court battles between the Denver & Rio Grande and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad was reestablished in the fall of 1998 and is now a premier attraction carrying more than 100,000 guests through the Royal Gorge each year.
