River Runners at the Royal Gorge

Do you want to become a Colorado raft guide, but have no previous experience? Apply to the River Runners raft guide training and work in Cañon City, Colorado for River Runners at the Royal Gorge. Rookies at our Cañon City location guide class III Bighorn Sheep Canyon rafting trips on the Arkansas River. Opportunities exist to train in the Royal Gorge, but most guides do not get certified on this class IV-V whitewater section until their second year. This year’s raft guide training starts Monday, May 20, 2019 at our riverside location in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Raft guide training fee is $500

Our raft guide training program at the River Runners Royal Gorge Rafting Center is $500, which includes two weeks of formal training. During this time, trainees are provided wetsuits, splash tops, booties, and personal flotation devices. Participants must provide their own personal gear upon completion of formal training, and will be expected to log additional training miles throughout the season. Camping is available, but meals are not included.

Colorado raft guide qualifications

A qualification run can be attempted after trainees log a minimum of 100 hours and 200 miles on the river. This takes at least three weeks. Trainees are not considered employees until they have successfully qualified. You must have a current First Aid and CPR certification by an accredited institution (online courses are not accepted) to qualify. Required personal equipment includes a type III PFD, throw bag, flip line, helmet, whistle, and river knife. A splash top, splash pants, polypro, fleece, neoprene socks, and/or similar gear are also recommended. Pro deals are available through River Runners upon your arrival.

Raft guide training is physically demanding

The River Runners Royal Gorge Rafting Center Guide Training Program involves risk. It is physically demanding and requires long and sometimes cold days on the river. Strong swimming ability is a must. Swiftwater rescue techniques will be practiced every day during training.
