Upper Arkansas River Basin Snowpack 128% of Normal
As we enter mid-January, the Upper Arkansas River Basin snowpack is above average at 128 percent of normal. This is awesome news for the upcoming whitewater rafting season, as summer conditions are directly related to how much snow there is in the mountains at the end of winter.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Colorado is experiencing a weak La Niña year. If temperatures remain near normal, this can lead to good snow in the basin.
Peak snowpack in the Upper Arkansas River Basin occurs around April 12 on average, so more than three months of snow accumulation remain before the whitewater season comes into focus. The trend is promising, though.
In addition to a healthy snowpack, the ground is saturated, and reservoir levels are above average. Also, the Voluntary Flow Management Program (VFMP) targets at least 700 cubic feet per second (CFS) at the Wellsville Gauge on the Arkansas River from July 1 to August 15. This augments flow for recreation after runoff.
On average, the Arkansas River starts running in mid-May, with peak flows in mid-June and family-friendly flows from July through Labor Day. Book before August 15 to catch the VFMP. Expect low water and alternate trip routes from August 16 – Labor Day.
