New Zip Line Short Drive from River Runners
Find family-friendly adventure at one of Colorado’s newest and highest zip line tours
A couple of us at River Runners recently visited Top of the Rockies Zip Line, a new Colorado zip line tour six miles north of Leadville, CO. While we’ve spent year’s whitewater rafting the Arkansas River in the valley below, this was our first time zipping through the trees on cables at 25 mph.
The zip line tour was only a few miles from our beloved Arkansas River’s headwaters, which provided a serene high-mountain setting with stunning views of the Colorado Rockies. After a safety orientation and practice run on a small zip line at the mountain’s base, it was just a short van ride to the top of the course.
We rode five zip lines down the mountain through lodge pole pines and over the Leadville Colorado/Southern Railroad Route. At the end of the zip line tour we visited an old gold mine, then took a short van ride back to the base. This concluded an awesome first-time zip line experience.
Zip Line Tour Times
Our zip line tour started at 12:30 with a meeting time at noon. The entire experience was about three hours including check-in and safety orientation. This time frame may vary with larger groups, but the tandem lines at Top of the Rockies Zip Line keep things moving quickly.
Zip Line Experience Not Required
It was the first zip line experience for all six people on our tour, which included the two of us from River Runners, two ladies from Oklahoma and a retired couple from Montana. Everyone seemed to have a great time thanks to the knowledgeable guides, who provided instruction and took care of technical details.
