Step 2: Choose a Rafting Trip

Once you’ve made the decision to book early, it’s time to decide on a rafting trip. The Arkansas River runs through Central Colorado and offers easy access to some of the best whitewater in the country. Rafting trips range from beginner to advanced and can be as short as a couple of hours or as long as several days. Raft the high country near Buena Vista or the canyon country near the Royal Gorge – all just a short and scenic drive from the Front Range or Summit County.

You may want to plan your trip around peak run-off or it may be pre-determined by your summer schedule. Either way it’s good to understand the general flow of a Colorado whitewater rafting season. The main rafting season on Colorado’s Arkansas River is May 1 – Labor Day. Peak run-off will depend on the previous winter’s snowpack, but in general high water is in late-May to mid-June, medium flows and warmer weather are common in late-June through mid-August, and lower flows with less crowds can be expected mid-August through early-September. Be aware of age restrictions as they relate to water levels and be sure to book a trip that is appropriate for everyone in your group.
